The Giza pyramids and Sphinx sit at the edge of greater Cairo, close enough that they're a half-day trip rather than an expedition, and the Grand Egyptian Museum nearby has made pre-booked timed entry increasingly worth arranging ahead of the trip rather than on arrival. Further south, a multi-day Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan adds the temple complexes at Karnak and the Valley of the Kings to a Cairo-based trip, though it's a genuinely separate leg, not a quick add-on.

## Getting around

Domestic flights connect Cairo, Luxor and Aswan in under 90 minutes each and are the practical way to link the two halves of a trip; the overnight train between Cairo and Luxor exists but takes considerably longer. Within Cairo, traffic is heavy and street layouts can be confusing for first-time visitors, so a private driver or guide — commonly arranged through a hotel — is worth the modest cost rather than relying on walking or ride-hailing apps alone for longer crossings of the city.

## When to go

October-April avoids the extreme summer heat, which regularly passes 40°C in Upper Egypt (Luxor and Aswan) in July and August and makes daytime sightseeing genuinely uncomfortable. December-February is the most popular and most expensive window; November and March offer a similar climate with fewer crowds at the major sites and better hotel rates.

## What a trip costs

A mid-range Cairo-and-Giza trip — comfortable hotel, meals, a private guide for the pyramids and museum, entry fees — runs roughly $60-100 per person per day, before flights. A Nile cruise is typically sold as its own multi-night package covering accommodation, meals and shore excursions, and is priced and booked separately from the Cairo portion of the trip.

## Before you go

- Entry to the pyramids plateau, the Sphinx, and the Grand Egyptian Museum are separate tickets; the museum in particular benefits from a pre-booked timed slot in high season.
- Bargaining is expected in markets and with unofficial guides or camel/horse operators near the pyramids; agree a price before, not after, a service is provided.
- Modest dress is appreciated at religious sites and generally more comfortable given the climate; light, loose, breathable clothing works for both.
- Bottled or well-filtered water is the safer default for drinking throughout the trip.
