# France Beyond Paris: Regions and the August Shutdown

> France travel planning: why Paris is one of many distinct regions, the TGV network that connects them, and why August isn't the best month to rely on small shops.

Paris dominates most first itineraries, reasonably, but Provence, Brittany and the Loire Valley are different enough in food, architecture and pace that a Paris-only trip barely counts as seeing France. The TGV high-speed network makes most of them a half-day or less from the capital, so a two-region trip is realistic even on a single one- or two-week visit.

## Choosing a second region

Provence brings lavender fields, hill towns and a Mediterranean pace best reached via Avignon or Aix-en-Provence, both under four hours from Paris by TGV. Brittany offers a rugged Atlantic coastline, distinct Celtic culture and excellent seafood, roughly three hours from Paris to Rennes. The Loire Valley's châteaux sit closer still, under two hours to Tours, making it the easiest add-on for a shorter trip. Each is different enough that combining more than one alongside Paris in under two weeks means rushing through all of them.

## Getting around

Book TGV tickets ahead — fares increase steadily as the departure date approaches, and early bookings can cost half of a last-minute one. Regional TER trains are slower but cheap, don't need advance booking, and are the way to reach smaller towns the TGV network skips. Within Paris, the metro covers the city thoroughly; a car becomes useful only once outside the rail network, in rural Provence or Brittany's coastline.

## The August shutdown and cost

Much of the country, including many small shops, bakeries and restaurants outside major tourist zones, closes for two to four weeks in August while owners take their own holiday — a real planning factor in smaller towns, less so in Paris and the biggest tourist centres, which stay open to serve visitors. France runs pricier than Spain or Portugal but comparable to Italy for lodging and dining, with Paris carrying its own premium over the regions.

## When to go

May–June and September avoid both August's shutdowns and the coldest, shortest days of winter, and also dodge the most crowded weeks at major sights like the Loire châteaux and Mont Saint-Michel.

## What first-timers get wrong

Trying to fit Paris and three regions into one trip. A more realistic first visit spends four or five days in Paris and picks a single other region rather than skimming the whole country by TGV.
