A first trip to Japan rewards a few good decisions and punishes a few bad ones. Everything else works itself out once you are there.

## When to go

Late October to early December and mid-April to May are the sweet spots: mild, dry, and either autumn colour or the tail of cherry blossom. Avoid Golden Week (late April to early May) and Obon (mid-August) when the whole country travels at once.

## The JR Pass math

Since the 2023 price increase the nationwide JR Pass only pays off on long routes. As a rule of thumb, a 7-day pass is worth it if you cover Tokyo to Kyoto and on to Hiroshima within a week. For a trip built around Tokyo with day trips, individual tickets are cheaper.

## Where to base yourself

Two bases beat four. Tokyo for the east, Kyoto for the west, with a bag transfer (`takkyubin`) between them. You lose half a day to each move, so minimise them.

## Book these early

- Studio Ghibli Museum tickets (sell out a month ahead)
- A `ryokan` with a private `onsen`, especially in autumn
- Any high-end sushi counter
