Riga's Art Nouveau district, concentrated along Alberta iela, is one of the largest and best-preserved collections of the style anywhere, and it's UNESCO-listed alongside the medieval Old Town a short walk away. Jūrmala, a beach town on the Baltic coast lined with wooden villas, is a half-hour commuter train from the capital and a popular local escape in summer, not a manufactured tourist add-on.

## Getting around

Riga's centre — the Old Town and the Art Nouveau streets just beyond it — is entirely walkable. The electric train to Jūrmala runs frequently throughout the day and is bought like any local commuter ticket, no advance booking or tour needed.

For the other Baltic capitals, Lux Express and Ecolines both run several daily coaches from Riga to Tallinn and to Vilnius, each roughly a four-hour ride with free wifi and reclining seats — comfortable enough that most travellers skip renting a car for the inter-city legs entirely. Rail Baltica, a planned high-speed rail line meant to eventually link all three Baltic capitals, is still under construction, so the bus is the practical option for now.

## When to go

June-August is the clear high point: warm enough for Jūrmala's beach, long evenings for the Old Town's outdoor cafes, and the fullest event and festival calendar. The Old Town and Art Nouveau district don't really have an off-season, though — both are worth visiting in shoulder months (April-May, September-October) when hotel prices drop and the streets are far less crowded, and even in winter when snow on the ornate facades is its own reason to go.

## What a trip costs

Latvia sits alongside Estonia and Lithuania as one of the more affordable countries in the EU — a fraction of what an equivalent Nordic trip costs. A realistic mid-range daily budget, per person, is roughly $70-95, covering a comfortable hotel, sit-down meals and local transport including the Jūrmala train.

## What to know before you go

The Art Nouveau district rewards slowing down rather than a checklist walk — most of the best building details (ornamental facades, sculptural balconies) are easy to miss at a normal walking pace, and the small Art Nouveau Centre museum on Alberta iela is worth the short visit for context before wandering. On a first trip, it's easy to under-budget time for Riga itself while rushing toward Tallinn or Vilnius — two full days in the city, not one, is what actually lets the Old Town and Art Nouveau district both land properly.
