At under half a square kilometre, Vatican City is the smallest sovereign
state in the world, and most visitors walk into it from Rome without noticing
the border — there's no passport check, since it functions as an open
enclave within Italy. St. Peter's Basilica is free to enter and worth the
wait; the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel charge admission, and the
walk-up queue can run to hours if a timed-entry ticket isn't booked ahead.
This is a half-day add-on to a Rome trip, not a destination that needs its
own base.

## Getting around

Everything is walkable — the whole state is smaller than most city parks.
Rome's Ottaviano or Cipro metro stops on Line A are the usual way in, a short
walk from both St. Peter's Square and the Vatican Museums entrance, which are
on opposite sides of the state and about a 15-20 minute walk apart around the
walls.

## When to go

Early morning entry, in any season, avoids both the worst heat and the
longest museum queues — book the first slot of the day if the schedule
allows it. Wednesdays sometimes bring a public papal audience in St. Peter's
Square, which is free to attend but adds crowds and security lines around the
basilica that morning. The museums are typically open Monday through
Saturday, closed Sundays except the last Sunday of the month, when entry is
free but the hours run shorter and the crowds are heaviest of the month.

## What it costs

A half-day visit costs relatively little: St. Peter's Basilica is free,
and a standard Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel ticket plus a coffee and
snack nearby runs **$25-45 per person**, not counting a guided tour, which
costs more but is worth it for the museums' scale. Climbing the dome of
St. Peter's has a separate, small entry fee.

## Before you go

- Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter St. Peter's Basilica or the
Vatican Museums — bring a scarf or light layer even in summer heat.
- Bags larger than a small backpack may need to go through additional
security screening or aren't allowed in at all.
- The Sistine Chapel enforces silence and a no-photography rule, both
  actively monitored by staff.
- St. Peter's Basilica itself has a separate security line from the
Museums — arriving early helps for either, but they aren't the same queue.
