Costa Rica in 10 Days: A First-Timer's Itinerary
A practical 10-day Costa Rica route covering San José, Arenal, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio — with drive times, costs and what to skip.
Costa Rica packs cloud forest, active volcanoes and two coastlines into an area smaller than West Virginia. Ten days is enough to see one coast properly. This route sticks to the well-connected north and central Pacific, keeps daily drives under four hours, and leaves room to do nothing.
The route at a glance#
| Days | Base | Why go |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | San José | Arrival, adjust, provision |
| 2–4 | La Fortuna / Arenal | Volcano, hot springs, waterfalls |
| 5–6 | Monteverde | Cloud forest, hanging bridges |
| 7–9 | Manuel Antonio | Beach, national park, wildlife |
| 10 | San José | Departure |
Days 2–4: Arenal#
The drive from San José to La Fortuna takes about three hours. Base yourself in town rather than by the lake — it is cheaper and closer to food.
Don't miss the free roadside view of the volcano on Route 142, and the La Fortuna waterfall early before the tour buses.
Days 5–6: Monteverde#
The back road from Arenal to Monteverde around the lake is slow, scenic and rougher than the map suggests — budget three hours. The reward is the cloud forest: book the first entry slot for the best wildlife and the thinnest crowds.
Days 7–9: Manuel Antonio#
Three hours south and 1,500 metres down, this is your beach stretch. The national park closes on Tuesdays and sells timed tickets online in advance — buy them before you arrive.
What to skip on a first trip#
- The Caribbean coast. Worth a trip of its own, not a detour.
- Corcovado. Remarkable, remote, and needs its own three days.
- Tortuguero. Only if turtle nesting season lines up with your dates.

Do I need a 4x4 in Costa Rica?+
For this itinerary a standard SUV is fine in the dry season. A 4x4 is worth it if you add remote areas like the Osa Peninsula or travel in the September–October rains.
Is 10 days enough for Costa Rica?+
Yes for one region. Ten days comfortably covers the Central Valley, the northern volcanoes and one stretch of Pacific coast without rushing.
