Planning a First Trip to Japan: What Actually Matters
The decisions that shape a first Japan trip: when to go, the JR Pass math in 2026, where to base yourself, and what to book months ahead.
A first trip to Japan rewards a few good decisions and punishes a few bad ones. Everything else works itself out once you are there.
When to go#
Late October to early December and mid-April to May are the sweet spots: mild, dry, and either autumn colour or the tail of cherry blossom. Avoid Golden Week (late April to early May) and Obon (mid-August) when the whole country travels at once.
The JR Pass math#
Since the 2023 price increase the nationwide JR Pass only pays off on long routes. As a rule of thumb, a 7-day pass is worth it if you cover Tokyo to Kyoto and on to Hiroshima within a week. For a trip built around Tokyo with day trips, individual tickets are cheaper.
Where to base yourself#
Two bases beat four. Tokyo for the east, Kyoto for the west, with a bag transfer (takkyubin) between them. You lose half a day to each move, so minimise them.
Book these early#
- Studio Ghibli Museum tickets (sell out a month ahead)
- A
ryokanwith a privateonsen, especially in autumn - Any high-end sushi counter

Is the JR Pass still worth it in 2026?+
Only for long-distance itineraries. After the 2023 price rise, a 7-day pass pays off if you do at least a Tokyo–Kyoto–Hiroshima round trip. For a Tokyo-and-day-trips trip, buy individual tickets.
